by Patrick O' Hare
... A guide to reed making for the uilleann pipes is a new publication on the art of reed making by professional reed maker Patrick O' Hare.
Patrick was taught the art of reed making by Dave Hegarty, Francie Mc Peake III and Brian Howard. After many years studying and practicing the art of reed making Patrick is now considered to be one of the fore most experts on reed making today. His reeds are played by a host of top performers such as John Mc Sherry, Sylvain Barou and Blackie O' Connell.
He has taught reed making extensively at numerous tionals and reed making workshops and is a regular teacher at the Pipecraft centre in Dublin. Some of Patricks former reed making students are now considered to be expert reed makers themselves. This new book on the subject is the result of many years hard work studying the craft of reed making and developing a method of reed making which will help to take away the fear that many pipers have when it comes to the dark art.
The book is in A4 format with over 60 high quality full colour photographs, on high quality gloss paper, detailing each of the reed making stages in a clear and concise fashion.

11/15/10: Na Píobairí Uilleann Source has been launched! In 2008 and 2009, thanks to funding from The Arts Council, Na Píobairí Uilleann filmed the working methods of four master pipe makers around the world. The result was many hours of footage covering all aspects of making the instrument. In considering the best method for deployment of the material it became clear, given the volume of material and the requirement for backup documentation, that issuing the video on conventional DVD format was not a viable approach. Rather, what was required was the ability to deploy large amounts of video and to organize the clips into meaningful sequential steps with the option of backup photographs, plans and documents for each clip. In exploring this approach, it became obvious that such a web based platform could also be used to deploy other media content and arrange it into Galleries and so the idea of the Source took shape ::: more»

09/08/10: From Bill Ochs: I have a proposal to keep music education alive in the schools in these belt-tightening times. I've started a new website called pennywhistlesforschools.com where I offer to provide schools with a pennywhistle and an instruction book for just $5 per student. I am throwing in a 44-minute instruction CD for free as a download. All schools have to do is make some homemade drums from found objects and they can have a real marching band that will bring joy to their students and to their communities.
A teacher named Kathy Clyne started a pennywhistle marching band called The Golden Eagles at P.S. 192 in Harlem in the '90s. You can watch a video clip of the Golden Eagles Tin Whistle Band on the home page of pennywhistlesforschools.com
It would be great to see little bands like this spring up all around the country. I hope you will visit the site pennywhistlesforschools.com and then help me spread the word to parents, people in education, and leaders of scout troops and other community groups... ::: more»

Dunn, this collection contains the manuscripts, books, sheet music, recordings, artifacts and ephemera collected by Michael J. Dunn. Musician and instrument maker/repairer Michael J. Dunn (1855 - 1935), also a captain of the Milwaukee Fire Department, was a contemporary and associate of the famed Irish music collector, Francis O'Neill. This collection contains thirty-two wax cylinders recorded sometime between c. 1904 and c. 1914 by Francis O'Neill of Chicago. The cylinders capture performances by noted uilleann piper Patrick Touhey, as well as Chicago musicians James Early, Bernard Delaney, John McFadden, and Edward Cronin. The collection also includes five hand-written manuscripts of Irish tunes, notated copies of O'Neill's Music of Ireland and Dance Music of Ireland (including hand-written music gathered from Touhey and Turlough McSweeney, the Donegal piper), as well as instruments, books, sheet music, and other items from Michael J.      MISSING PIPES:

    Hi fellow pipers,

I'm in a bit of a panic at the moment. I've just returned from a gig in Zaragoza/Spain where my pipes went missing. I'm basically playing a waiting game and am unable to work until they show up. I would very much appreciate it if you could keep a keen eye out for them and if you have any information regarding their whereabouts please contact me at info@johnmcsherry.com

Below is a description of the pipes:
A full set of African blackwood concert D uilleann pipes made by Dave Williams with a keyless boxwood chanter made by Sean McAloon.
The words "Made for John McSherry by Dave Williams, 2000" are engraved on the brass around the stock and one of the tenor regulator keys and mount is broken off.

Also missing are two Overton low whistles (D and F)

    Cheers
    John McSherry

    20/10/04: James Ennis's Bagpipes

Many years ago Séamus Ennis left his father James's bagpipes in trust with my father Tom Mulligan. The pipes had no bag attached to them and had two boxes of chanter and drone reeds.

Now over 25 years later, in conjuntion with Séamus' sister Ursula, we have restored them to full working order. This task of getting them back in playing order has been recently carried out ith great dedication and skill by piper Dave Rickard from Cabra, Dublin. I had the pleasure of hearing him playing them in my house two weeks ago. They would seem to be mellower than the sound of modern bagpipes and have a lovely balance between chanter and drones. Dave tells me that they appear to be an R.G. Lawrie set. There is also a Brian Boru chanter along with the stamped Lawrie Chanter. James Ennis, who died in January 1964 aged 75 years, played these pipes before he took up the uilleann pipes and played them before he got married in 1917. Séamus himself also played these bagpipes. James I'm told, was the leading piper with the Dublin Pipers Club in the early 20th Century and played them right up to about 1947. (I hope to get further information on James Ennis and his bagpiping days in the near future and if anyone can help in this respect I would be very grateful - contact: neillidh@eircom.net)

The Ennis family have decided to donate this set of bagpipes to the Séamus Ennis Cultural Centre and this will take place at the Piping Recital as part of the Scoil Shamhna Shéamuis Ennis in Naul, County Dublin, next Friday at 8.30 pm. We will get an opportunity to see and hear them on the night when Dave Rickard will play them.

Geoff Wooff - Silver Anniversary Set
To mark 25 years of pipe-making, Geoff Wooff intends to produce a Silver anniversary set!
This instrument will be ready by May/June 2003 and its purchase is open to anyone, either on or not on his extremely long waiting list.
The set will be made in Black Ebony with solid Silver keys and ferrules and Mammoth Ivory mounts.
His preference is to produce this ‘one off’ set in the key of B or C, but a different key could be stipulated by the successful applicant.
This is a genuine opportunity for anyone to ‘short circuit’ the current 13 year wait!
    Letters of interest to:
Geoff Wooff, Miltown Malbay, co. Clare, Ireland.

  • 07/08/01 - STOLEN PIPES! - On May 22nd in Nantes, France, a set of Froment drones and regulaters and a Robbie Hughes chanter were stolen, there were no bellows with the set. The mainstock was engraved with the following:
"Made for Didier Jaffredo by AG Froment Kenmare 1991".
The chanter had no keys, the back D was modified similar to that on a Froment chanter and the front holes were flattened with a file, it was also unreeded. Another distinguishing feature is that white cotton was used to wrap all the joints.
The owner is offering a reward equivalent to 5000french francs for information that leads to their retreival.
Please contact Greg Dolan at ggdolan@yahoo.com.au with any possible leads.
